The epidural rate for our patients is about 60%. Village Obstetrics supports our patients through whatever method or level of pain medication is necessary for birth.
The answer is personal and different for every woman, but these are some we have heard in support of using less medication with birth:
“my breastfeeding goes better”; “I am closer to my baby”; “I am proud of myself”; “I bond better with my baby”; “ I recover faster”; “my husband or partner is proud of me”;” I am more present at my child’s birth”; “It is the moment in my life so far that I am most proud of”.
Like many difficult feats, it isn’t easy and sometimes not possible on the first try. For instance, think about how many Olympic gold medalists failed to medal or qualify in previous events before winning gold. Their past experiences, determination, coaching, and usually a little luck helped them succeed. Likewise, it is with natural childbirth; very hard accomplishments take practice and patience! Our triple D winning recipe is Determination, Doula, and Doctor. If you want it, give yourself time, and we promise you can do it (baring an unexpected complication with the baby or placenta- that’s the luck factor). However, if you don’t get there for your first delivery, then you still can for your second.
Understanding the simple story of normal, natural birth, what helps and what sabotages nature’s plan for birth, and the appropriate use of interventions are discussed and form the foundation for coming to the conclusion that nature’s plan makes sense. Women are inherently capable of giving birth, have a deep, intuitive instinct about birth, and, when supported and free to find comfort, are able to give birth without interventions and without suffering. Why natural childbirth? Ultimately, women find the answer to that question themselves. What they need from us as childbirth educators is to know that nature’s design works beautifully. Confident women who are supported and encouraged and who enjoy the freedom to tap into their own wisdom find deep satisfaction in giving birth naturally. The process itself prepares mother and baby perfectly in every way to continue on their journey together.
Some women choose to give birth naturally because they love the challenge. Others find great satisfaction in working hard and “getting the job done.” Many women are eager to avoid anything that might harm their babies or themselves. But the most compelling reason to choose natural childbirth is a universal one. Women know how to give birth without machines, epidurals, and fear. Why natural childbirth? The more important question might be “Why not?”
